original documents, metal frame, MDF panel on wheels
2025
The work consists of an accumulation of drawings produced with a pen plotter. Documents that bear my name, such as airport delay notices, medical bills, and welfare communications, become the medium onto which a mechanical arm redraws pages from my notebook containing drawings, notes and measurements. As these documents accumulate, the notebook pages are progressively transferred onto them, forming a layered stack of marks belonging to two different regimes of signs. On one side is my existence as a bureaucratic subject within abstract systems; on the other is my daily, subjective existence expressed through the notes and traces I record.
Through digitalisation and the use of a robotic arm, these two dimensions are made to collide, overlap, and partially censor one another. The work is structured as a frame that hosts this ongoing accumulation: each new document is drawn on and placed on top, concealing the previous layers and constantly transforming the work’s surface. The relationship between the back of the frame and the office panel, both made of MDF, creates a trompe-l’œil effects, referencing Renaissance Dutch and French still-life paintings depicting letters and documents pinned to wooden boards.
